Redundant workers from the Mitsubishi manufacturing plant in South Australia are being sought to help address the skills shortage in the Dubbo region. Orana regional development board, GoWest, is doing an audit of job vacancies and will attend a jobs expo in Adelaide next week to try to recruit some of the 1,000 people who are out of work. GoWest chairman John Walkom says it is a chance to address the skills shortage in the automotive sector. "Most people that are tied up with automotive industry will be a fitter of some sort or involved with the electrics of motor vehicles or mechanics, so we'll have a lot of experience in that area," he said. "But also then we're going to have what their partners do, so we might well have trained nurses or people suitable for the tourism industry." The Member for Dubbo, Dawn Fardell, has backed the GoWest initiative. She says it is a visionary move given the skills shortage in the region. "These fellows are very skilled, trained workmen, they've been employed in Mitsubishi for quite some time," she said. "I look at other parts of my area, not just Dubbo, but Parkes with Nash Tanks and SCT Logistics all those areas that are just crying out for skilled tradesmen." |
